Dennis Burroughs

Chair
Born and raised in Philadelphia's Black Bottom, Dennis has been active with the Promise Zone since 2016. He serves on the Penn Advisory Board and Baring Street Community, focusing on understanding and serving his community.

Rita Nelson

Secretary
A West Powelton resident for over 50 years, Rita joined the Promise Zone in 2018. Her involvement as a Promise Neighborhood Surveyor deepened her connection to community-based research.

Amy Carroll-Scott

An Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Community Health and Prevention at Drexel’s Dornsife School of Public Health, Dr. Carroll-Scott’s research addresses urban health and social inequities through community-based participatory approaches.

Yolanda Williams

A researcher and Clinical Program Operations Manager in the Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Formerly a Clinical Research Project Manager for a large NIH-funded study at CHOP, she has over 15 years of socio-behavioral research experience. She earned her MPH from Temple University in Community Health Education and is committed to promoting health equity and ethical clinical research in communities of color. She resides in Wynnefield Heights, has a daughter in college in West Philadelphia, and has extensive experience working with African American youth, young adults, and faith communities.

Lorraine Gomez

Lorraine Gomez is a lifelong Philadelphian who graduated from Overbrook High School, attended Saint Augustine’s College, and served in the U.S. Air Force as a Mobile Communication Specialist. She co-founded the Viola Street Residents Association securing historic landmark status for Viola Street and has served as a Community Coordinator for both the East Parkside Residents Association and the Carroll Park Community Council. Currently, Lorraine is the Neighborhood Advisory Committee Coordinator at Mount Vernon Manor Community Development Corporation for Mantua, East Parkside, and Powelton Village. She also serves as a Bike Ambassador with the Bicycle Coalition and a Health Ambassador with Drexel University’s Wellness Hub.

David Pickett

President and co-founder of the West Belmont Civic Association, established in 2015 to address crime and blight in Belmont. He has managed properties at Drexel University for 30 years and chairs the Philadelphia 16th Police District Advisory Council. David also serves on the Promise Neighborhood’s Community Advisory Committee, the Promise Zone Community Research Review Board, and the Promise Zone Public Safety Committee, and is the music minister at Whosoever Metropolitan Community Church. In addition, he is a member of the Drexel Area Property Association and HAPCO. He lives in Belmont with his husband of 28 years and their dog, Justice.

Gweny Love

Executive Director of Mantua Worldwide Community, Inc., Gweny leads initiatives in public health, environmental sustainability, and youth development. She is also an artist, poet, and advocate for anti-violence and wellness programs.

Yvonne Hughes

A Mill Creek resident for over 20 years and is active in the Promise Zone and Promise Neighborhood initiatives. As Deputy Administrator for the nonprofit “It’s Not Your Fault,” she serves as a community outreach specialist. A member of the National Federation of the Blind and a former Statewide Independent Living Council member, Yvonne partners with the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities and advocates for parents in the school district. Previously a teacher and trainer of teachers, she also served as a captain with the Read By initiative and is an ordained minister.

Miyah Mack

A Mill Creek resident and former Strengthening Families Coordinator with CUA 10. She currently works as a Service Coordinator for the Community Health Choices Program, serving primarily West Philadelphia residents. Miyah has experience working with homeless youth and juveniles in the system, and she runs the Resources West Philly Facebook and Instagram pages to keep the community informed.

Hyden Terrell

Living in Belmont, Hyden is a Data Lead for the Promise Neighborhood and Assistant Community Researcher for the Promise Zone. She actively participates in civic organizations and has interviewed 16 IRBs to ensure ethical research in West Philadelphia.

Christine Baker

Christine Baker is a Mantua resident with an MBA who currently serves as a Diversity and Inclusion Manager. Her interests include improving healthcare access and costs—ranging from high blood pressure treatment to natural medicine—proactively addressing gun violence, supporting an aging population, examining social media’s long-term effects, and updating school curricula to better prepare students for future success.
